Red Cross Lifeguard Training

Interested in a great summer job or a challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. Digital certificate available upon successful completion of course.



Prerequisites: Must be at least 16 years old and pass the required swimming & skills test which include:





  1. Prospective participants must show that they can swim 300 yards continuously using breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but, swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. NOTE:  There is not time requirement for this skill.


  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.


  3. Start in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute 40 seconds. (NOTE: When returning to the starting point, the candidate must hold the 10lb. object with both hands and must keep his or her face above the water.  This can be achieved by swimming on their back using a whip (breaststroke kick on their back) or a rotary (eggbeater) kick.

Location: Monday 2p-4p @ Kingsbury Club (186 Summer St. Kingston), Tuesday - Friday 8:30a-3:30p @ Hedges Pond (158 Hedges Pond Rd)      
Cost: $200

*The top performing candidates may be offered seasonal employment with the town as a lifeguard depending on availability and provided they pass the skills test for waterfront life guarding.  If you qualify to work full time for the summer for the Recreation Department this course is FREE! Contact the office for more information.


Registration and Refund Information
Registration: Student is only considered registered (and spot reserved) in a program once payment is received. Online registration & payment is the quickest and easiest way to secure a spot in a program. Registration is also accepted in our office and by mail on a first-come first-served basis.
Refunds: There will be a $10 processing fee for all refunds/credits and all requests must be made at least 5 business days prior to the start of the program.
Non-Resident Fee: There is a $10 per participant per program surcharge for non-Plymouth residents. To be considered a resident, one must reside in or own a residence within the Town of Plymouth limits at the time registration is submitted.
Confirmations: Please keep a record of your registration. Confirmations are emailed as soon as your registration is processed; no further confirmations or reminders are provided.
Outdoor Program: Due to any weather cancellations, programs could be scheduled a make class that extends beyond the original end date. No refunds or credits will be given for make up dates.
